Students and parents arriving at Brookeside Montessori School in Bechtelsville on Thursday morning, Oct. 4, discovered a wounded red tail hawk next to a shrub in the flower beds in front of the school.
Robin John, Head of School, called the Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven, Pa for advice on what to do.
Barbara Miller, a retired attorney now wildlife rescuer for Red Creek came to the school to rescue the wounded animal.
She instructed John to cover the hawk with a recycling bin to keep it confined and calm until she arrived. Brookeside staff closed off the parking lot area where the hawk was located.
Within the hour, Miller arrived and, wearing thick gloves for protection, gently picked it up with a blanket. She made a quick assessment of the hawk’s condition before loading it into a carrierand transporting it to the Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven.
Students at Brookeside have decided to do a fundraiser to help defray the cost of the hawk’s care. They will stay in touch with Red Creek WIldlife Center to monitor the hawk’s condition.
