The Kutztown and Fleetwood football teams renewed their annual rivalry Friday night in Fleetwood. The Tigers’ Tyler Emge set a new school rushing record and fell just short of another as he led his team to a 43-7 victory over Kutztown.
It was a game between two winless teams in the Berks Football League, and Emge took the bull by the horns for Fleetwood by rushing for 170 yards in the game. He fell just one yard short of the school record for yards rushing in a single game.
The good news is that he set a new school record for rushing yards in a season when he finished with 908 yards this year, breaking the old record of 776 by Chris Urban in 2003.
Matt Hook got the Tigers on the board in the first quarter with a 34 yard field goal. Then Emge ran 34 yards for a touchdown to make it 10-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Stephen Hilborn ran in from 42 and 17 yards out to give the Tigers a comfortable 23-0 halftime lead.
A four-yard touchdown run by Emge in the third quarter, and a 17-yard touchdown run by Jaban Johnson in the fourth gave Fleetwood an insurmountable 37-0 lead.
Nate Onorofsky got the Cougars on the board with a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but Fleetwood answered with a 62-yard touchdown run by Thaddius Cornick.
Fleetwood finished the night with 458 total yards, 382 of them coming on the ground. In addition to Emge’ great night, teammate Hilborn ran for 117 yards on 11 carries.
