Over the next several months, hundreds of community members will be busy preparing for the fifth annual Relay for Life of Boyertown.

The area’s fundraising goal for this year is $233,000. Last year more than $216,000 was raised to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“Out of over 5,200 Relays across the country, the Relay For Life of Boyertown ranked #195 in money raised last year. Perhaps we’ll make the top 100 in 2013—why not?” said Amy Miller, American Cancer Society representative.

Organizers are hoping to have at least 55 teams registered for this year’s event in Boyertown; last year 44 teams participated. As of Friday, March 1, 36 teams consisting of 222 participants have registered for this year and have already raised $40,088.

“The majority of the money raised stays in the immediate area,” said Jim Davidheiser, event chair. “We’re committed to this thing. It’s all about the support—not the money.”

Back in 2008, Boyertown’s first Relay For Life kicked off with 33 teams and more than 600 participants.

“We’re always looking for survivors and caregivers to get involved,” said Miller.

Interested parties can register as corporate or family teams. Diane Davidheiser would more be more than willing to answer any questions and to speak with those that are interested in signing up. She can be reached at 484-645-3425.

The Cancer Resource Network can be reached at 1-800-227-2345 for information, help and support related to cancer.

Relay for Life of Boyertown is community event and is open to public. This year’s relay will be held on June 22 at 10 a.m. until June 23 at 10 a.m. Community members do not have to register to visit or walk, and are invited to come and go as they please.

A dance marathon benefiting the Relay For Life of Boyertown is scheduled for March 22 at Boyertown Junior High West.

Relay For Life of Boyertown team meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Church. These meetings are open to public for anyone interested in learning more information about Relay For Life.
